Earth Day

Tzu Chi Collegiate Association members at the Walk for the Earth event in San Dimas, California.

April 22 is Earth Day. 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and 20th anniversary of Tzu Chi's environmental protection work. Tzu Chi's environmental protection work involves tens of thousands of volunteers around the world, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender and age.

Tzu Chi volunteers protect the environment by raising environmental awareness and engaging in recycling work. Recycled PET bottles are made into blankets to be delivered to disaster survivors or evacuees, and the proceeds from recycling go toward charitable work. This creates a cycle of love and kindness. The aphorism featured this month, "turn garbage into gold, gold into love, love into a pure stream that circles the world," reflects this loving cycle.

In this issue, we bring you information from the Americas and Asia. We hope you enjoy reading our newsletter. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to send an email to info@us.tzuchi.org

Let us work together to protect our planet!

It is the 20th anniversary of Tzu Chi's environmental protection/recycling work. Tzu Chi's environmental protection work started 20 years ago after Dharma Master Cheng Yen, in one of her speeches, urged the public to use our hands to engage in environmental protection work. Volunteers of all ages, ranging from 1 to 104, engage in recycling work in different parts of the world.

As part of Earth Day initiatives, Tzu Chi volunteers throughout the US organized and participated in various environmental protection events such as street cleaning, park cleaning, walkathon, etc. In Southern California, Tzu Chi Collegiate Association members and local community members gathered together to "Walk for the Earth" on April 3. Excerpt from Dharma Master Cheng Yen's Teaching

Master Teaching

At this very moment, different people are doing different things. Some are caring for people in need and benefiting their community. Others are acting in a way that creates problems. This all takes place in the same second---each person uses that same second differently.
